Tokyo is seen as a big sprawling metropolis, but in fact, there are a number of areas blessed with high-quality water where sake brewing has been carried out from long ago. Among them are breweries designated by the government as important cultural properties. There, visitors can encounter remnants of a spirited past. We introduce sake brewing facilities across Tokyo that are sure to delight not only sake lovers, but also anyone with a taste for charming architectural structures.

Fussa City, Tokyo

Sake brewery with six buildings registered as Tangible Cultural Properties. Used to brew sake as well as beer. A multi-purpose kura on site is also designated a cultural property and currently houses a museum, where visitors can learn about the history of sake brewing.

Sake brewery with buildings and structures designated tangible cultural properties. Comprised of main, middle and new kura, the sake brewery is uniquely constructed, reflecting how the kura expanded over the decades.

Kita Ward, Tokyo

A brick structure that’s also called the “Red Brick Sake Brewery Factory”. Designated an important cultural property, it has walls and ceilings fitted with arches that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

*Inside of the facility is closed to the public. The exterior can be viewed from the Brewing Laboratory Site Park.
